Wet Basement -
How did this water get into my basement?

Wet basement is a common issue that many homeowners like you will face at some point in your home.  Water problems in your home’s basement will get worse when not properly fixed, and can be ongoing.

Basement repair can be easier if you can determine the area where water and moisture is getting in.

Look for these signs and ways that water may be infiltrating your home:

  1. Hydrostatic Pressure - a common problem when it comes to a wet basement.  This occurs when any water or moisture from the sky saturates the soil and meets the existing ground water.  This causes the water table in the soil to rise, and in turn, will start to put pressure against the foundation walls from the outside.
  2. Hydrostatic pressure is a leading factor when it comes to cracks in foundations, and can also cause your basement walls to start buckling inward.  It is very important to have the proper grading around your home in order for moisture from the elements to run off away from your home.
  3. Basement window wells – Water accumulation in the window wells outside your home after a while can start to filtrate through and come into your basement.

  4. Cracks in foundation walls and floors –Cracks in your home’s foundation increase the possibility of water coming into your basement leading to more basement repair needs.

  5. Seeping through concrete foundation – Concrete is a very porous material.  Water can seep through your concrete foundation and which creates moist spots on foundation walls and floors.  You may not notice the moisture until you spot a white or sometimes brown powdery substance on the concrete which is called efflorescence, the powdery substance that water leaves behind on concrete.

Wet basement repair is an action that you need to take now if water has already made it into your home.  It will prevent future water infiltration and headaches for you, as well as give you peace of mind when the next rainy season is due.
