Leaky
Basement
A leaky basement
normally gets worse if it is not dealt with and fixed,
and can become very costly to you. Basement waterproofing
is a basic need for your home that should be addressed
as soon as any water leaks are found.
Leaky basements
can occur in your home in different ways.
Knowing where and how the water is getting into your
basement is only the first step in battling the problem.
A professional waterproofing contractor can help you
determine how the water is entering your basement and
what waterproofing method is best for your situation.
Following are three examples of how water can create
a leaky basement.
- Hydrostatic Pressure - When any
water or moisture from the sky saturates the soil
and meets the existing ground water. This
raises the water table in the soil and in turn,
starts to put pressure against the foundation walls
from the outside. This can cause cracks in
the foundation walls and floors, allowing water
to seep through causing a leaky basement.
This pressure can also cause the walls to start
to buckle inward, weakening the entire foundation.
- Basement window wells – Water
accumulating and settling in the window wells outside
the home can start to seep through and get into
your basement.
- Seeping through concrete foundation
– Water can also seep through the pores of
concrete block and poured concrete. A lot
of times you will not notice this happening right
away until you see the white or brown powdery substance
it leaves behind called efflorescence.
