How to Repair Leaking Basements

So you need to find out how to repair leaking basements. If you’re already seeing water problems in your basement such as moisture on the walls or floors, efflorescence, or mold and mildew, an interior waterproofing solution is the best way to go.

Basement leaking can be alleviated by installing a drain tile system. Drain tile is a can capture the water coming in and direct it to a sump pump so it can be removed from the basement. It is essentially a trench dug into the floor near the wall to collect water. It is not a do-it-yourself project since it does involve the use of a jack hammer. Also, the best sump pump system will consist of not only your primary pump, but a second pump as well with a backup battery so the pump can run even when the power is out. This is especially important, since the times you will need it most will probably be when you are experiencing heavy storms which often cause power outages at the same time.

You may have seen companies advertising waterproof basement paint or concrete sealers as leaking basements fixes. These will in fact do more harm than good in the long run. The sealer or paint seals only the interior of your walls where you apply it and will trap water in your concrete foundation walls. Over time, this will lead to major structural damage to your foundation, thus weakening your entire home. And, in fact, you will start to see water in your basement again since the cracks that will form will allow even more water to get inside.
