Damp
Basement
Have a damp basement?
Does your basement feel icky and musty? Did you know
that concrete is a porous material that allows water
to seep through? Air bubbles created during the concrete
forming process allow water to enter and seep through
concrete blocks. This can lead to water absorption and
seepage into your basement.
If you already knew this,
did you think you had this problem tackled because you
sealed your concrete walls? Did you know that you may
have done more damage than good by sealing your interior
walls? Check out our page on concrete sealers to find
out more about this issue. In short concrete sealers
can actually trap water inside the concrete block leading
to structural damage.
Damp basements
can be caused by water seepage through walls, but this
is only one of the ways water can enter your basement.
Water could also be entering through window wells, leaky
pipes, or condensation because of humidity. The good
news is there are solutions for each one of these problems
(French drains, dehumidifiers, sump pumps, etc.) but
not every solution works for every problem.
Because of the many reasons
you may have a damp basement, it’s
a good idea to hire a professional waterproofing contractor
to determine how the water is getting in and how to
stop it. This is not something you should try to tackle
by yourself.
