Best Fix for Clogged French Drain

Added February 1, 2007

Q: I have a clogged French drain and need to know the best way to fix it. I can get to one end of the pipe.

A: This is the problem with using a pipe for a French drain. You may not want to dig everything up, but if you want to keep this from happening it might be the only solution. If the pipe (probably perforated) wasn’t covered with gravel before being covered with dirt this allows dirt and mud to seep through the holes in the pipe, thus causing clogs.

A high pressure hose may dislodge the dirt for now, but you need to prevent this situation in the future. Start by digging up the pipe. Next either completely replace the pipe with gravel or at least cover the pipe with gravel to keep mud and dirt from clogging the pipe again.
