Clogged
Gutters and Cleaning Up Water Damage

Q:
Our gutters clogged which backed up water and ended
up leaking water into our basement. We’ve since cleaned
and unclogged them but I need to know if cleaning with
bleach is all I need to do as far as repairing the damage
in our basement. Is there anything else needed for waterproofing
our basement?
A: Unclogging the gutters is a good first step,
but only a first step. How do you keep the situation
from happening again? You need to perform regular maintenance
on your gutters so that you don’t get a potentially
damaging clog again.
Also,
constructing a French drain leading away from the foundation
of your house can be a good backup plan as well. This
way, even if the gutters do get clogged again, the water
will have somewhere else to go other than into your
foundation.
Cleaning
with a bleach water solution is a good idea as well
to clean up and/or prevent the growth of mold and mildew.
But, if there is significant damage to drywall or other
porous surfaces you should remove these materials and
replace with new. A sump pump with interior drain tile
system can also help remove any future water that enters
your basement.
