Sump Pump Running All the Time

Added December 9, 2006

Q. My house is located in a flood zone. My basement used to flood every time we got heavy rains. I thought my problems would be solved with the indoor French drain and sump pump I had installed. In the past eleven years I’ve went through nine sump pumps! The pump is running every five minutes and the area near the pump smells like a sewer. Yes, I’ve double checked my sewer lines and they are not leaking. Where is this smell coming from, how do I get rid of it, and how can I stop burning up sump pumps?

A: You had the right idea installing the sump pump and drain tile(interior French drain). However, it sounds like you need a larger capacity pump and should also add a second backup pump to compliment your system. Here’s why. Horsepower means virtually nothing, you need to go for a sump pump with a large gallons per minute capacity. This will keep the pump from having to work as hard to remove the water. Also, by adding a second high capacity pump that can kick on during times of large water removal (like heavy rains) you will increase the life span of your pump. Now, onto the sewer smell. This is caused by stagnant water in the sump basin. The stagnant water is most likely because your pump is unable to remove all the water that is collecting. So, the water sits, becomes stagnant, resulting in the sewer smell. Follow the recommendations above and you should be sewer smell free in no time and will find your pump lasts much longer.
