Basement
Waterproofing Recommendations

Q.
Do you have any recommendations for waterproofing a
basement?
A: Yes and no. You must first determine where
the water in your basement is coming from before you
can decide on a method for waterproofing. If the water
is coming from standing groundwater outside your home,
you need to make sure your downspouts are emptying far
enough away from the house. Another option for exterior
drainage is to construct a French drain so the water
will flow away from the foundation instead of to it.
If the water is not caused by standing groundwater,
it may be because of hydrostatic pressure forcing moisture
from the surrounding soil through the walls. The best
solution for this is to combine an interior tile and
a sump pump to pull the water out of the basement. Just
make sure the sump pump empties the water far enough
away from your home so that you don’t end up pumping
the same water back out of your basement again.
