Installing
a French Drain
Installing a French
drain is a method you may have heard about
installing for alleviating your water problems? You
want to know where you get one and how you do it? Well,
it’s not quite that simple.
Installing French
drain instructions are not just directions
for a product you buy and “hook up.” Installing
a French drain actually entails
construction. A French drain is essentially a trench
dug in the ground to remove standing water from an area.
The trench must be dug on an incline so the water will
drain away from the area and must discharge properly
to either a city drainage system or far enough away
from your foundation so that the water isn’t seeping
around your foundation. You also have to make sure you
don’t flood your neighbor’s yard in the
process. A check with local building codes will let
you know the proper way to discharge your French drain.
If you’ve been researching
installing French drain you may have
seen something called a drain tile. You may have been
wondering what the difference is between a French drain
and a drain tile. A drain tile is basically the same
thing but installed inside your basement. Drain tile
is constructed a little differently than installing
a French drain because it is inside your basement.
It doesn’t need to slope quite as much as a French
drain since there is usually a sump pump to assist in
removing the water from the basement. For more information,

tile page. And to find out if a French drain or
drain tile is the right solution for your wet basement
