Dehumidifier

A dehumidifier is one way to battle the moisture issue you have in your basement. You have a damp and musty smell in your basement.  You know that the humidity levels are pretty high, which means you have quite a bit of moisture in the air, but you don’t know the best route to go in solving the problem.

A basement dehumidifier is a unit you can have installed in your home that work by filtering damp, moist air over a refrigerated coil.  The moisture condenses when it filters through the unit, which becomes water, and it drips into either a tub, bucket, or pan, which will need to be emptied regularly.  The other side of the coil, which is warmer, reheats the air.

While a dehumidifier in a basement is a great way to help remedy the moisture problem you have, it can potentially cause damage to stone and concrete foundations.  Concrete foundations are a very porous material.  Concrete already has water trapped within it, and a dehumidifier can draw the moisture out of the concrete.  This can result in efflorescence, as well as possibly creating hairline cracks in your foundation.

A dehumidifier is a wonderful solution in helping to maintain the moisture levels in the basement, however, contacting a waterproofing company to come in and assess the situation in your basement is a necessary step in helping you to rid yourself of the moisture problem in your basement.
