Concrete
Sealer
What is a concrete
sealer and how does it work? While concrete
is a very hard durable material, what many people do
not realize is that it is actually quite porous. Concrete
can allow water to seep through, much like a sponge.
This can lead to water infiltration in your home’s
foundation and basement. Because of this, some people
might think that sealing the concrete would be a solution
to their wet basement problem.
Concrete sealers
are products designed to repel moisture from concrete.
Sounds great doesn’t it? Think again. While these
products are great for driveways and sidewalks, they
are not a feasible solution for a wet basement. A concrete
sealer can actually trap the water inside the concrete
which will cause further structural damage. Even so
called “penetrating” sealers do not last
long and can be sensitive to freezing and thawing. In
addition, these may also stain your concrete in a way
you do not care for.
If you use a concrete
sealer on only the interior of your basement,
the water will still seep from the outside into the
concrete blocks. With the sealer stopping the water
on the one side of the block, the water will become
trapped and begin to weaken and damage the blocks of
the foundation. Before you even realize you have a problem,
you may find that your foundation walls are seriously
compromised and your foundation is structurally unsound.
A professional waterproofing
contractor can inspect your basement and determine
the point or points of water infiltration and recommend
a solution that will leave you with a dry, structurally
sound basement.
