Basement
Waterproofing Systems
Basement waterproofing
systems are not just one product that solves
everything. It is a team of products that work together
as a system to keep your basement warm and dry. So,
what products are out there and how do they work? This
article will review a few of the products out there
to give you an idea of how they can help you and your
home. For a review of a few more products see our Waterproofing
Products page.
Drain Tile
A basement waterproofing
system that includes a drain tile is a good
start for protecting your basement. If you know what
a French drain is, then this concept is easy, it’s
the interior version of it. If you don’t know
what that is, here’s a little explanation. A drain
tile system is a trench dug into the floor of the basement
close to the wall with porous piping in the trench and
gravel over the pipe to filter debris. The water collected
in the drain tile is drawn by gravity to a sump basin
where it is removed from the basement by a sump pump.
This is not a good candidate for a do-it-yourself project
since it does involve using a jack hammer to break up
the basement floor.
Waterguard System
A good waterproofing
system that is not only effective but also
more attractive than traditional drain tile is the patented
Waterguard System. This takes the idea of a drain tile
and takes it a step further. The Waterguard system is
specially designed to alleviate the problems many drain
tile systems experience like clogging with mud. It is
designed with holes in the back of the piping system
to allow entry of water but not get clogged. Installation
leaves only a small gap between wall and floor so water
can enter the system without creating an eyesore.
