Methods to Repair a Wet Basement

Wet basements can be a big nuisance to you, the homeowner, as well as put a big damper into your checkbook if the problem is not tended to.  Once you have determined the source of the water problem and how it is getting into your basement, there are different methods and solutions that can be done to help eleviate the situation.

One of the most common methods for helping to repair a wet basement is the use of crack injections to foundation walls and floors.   Crack injections come in different substances.

  1. Polyurethane injections
  2. Epoxy injections

Polyurethane is flexible, and forms a barrier that water cannot penetrate, but does not add any structural strength when it is applied.

Epoxy injections stops water from seeping in through the cracks, as well as add to the strength of the foundation.

Waterproofing a wet basement may also require that you install a sump pump system to help control the water outside and underneath your home from seeping in through your foundation.  The pumps are installed in the lowest point of the home, and if the water levels get to the point where the pump needs to start working, it will pump the water through a pipe that leads away from your foundation.

To really help your wet basement, you can also have alarms installed with the sump pump.  These alarms are very helpful in the event that more water is coming in than the pump can handle, or if the system fails altogether, that you are notified right away.  The alarms run off a battery and are similar to smoke alarms, they chirp and let you know when the battery needs to be replaced.

Wet basements may also be caused by the grading outside your home.  The grading should be in a way that the water flows away from the home foundation.  This is very important, because if the landscape is not properly graded, the water can collect and start to seep into the soil instead of running off, causing the water to start coming through the home foundation.
