Basement
Design
Basement
design
can help you add usable square feet to your home. You
can turn that unused space into a game room for your
family and guests or even an extra bedroom or home office
space. The possibilities are only limited by your imagination
and of course, your budget.
Before
you begin putting your hard earned money into your basement
design, you need to make sure that your basement
is ready to be finished. The most important thing you
need to do is make sure that your basement is properly
waterproofed. Without good waterproofing, your newly
designed basement could become your worst nightmare
as your possessions and new interior designs become
mush in a flood of water.
Once
you have your basement properly waterproofed, then your
true basement designing can begin.
First consider that your basement gets little to no
natural light. So you will want to make sure you install
plenty of light fixtures as well as electrical outlets
down there. When choosing lights, pick fixtures that
will allow you to use bulbs that can mimic natural light.
Another
consideration in your basement design
will be your paint colors. Stick with colors that are
bright, light and airy. Stay away from wall coverings
such as dark wood paneling as this will make your basement
design look like a cave instead of a room you can enjoy.
Lastly,
in your basement design is your choice
of flooring materials. You have to be careful with this
as well because certain flooring materials do not hold
up well in below grade installations. For instance,
traditional hardwood floors do not do well in a basement
design. Instead, choose engineered hardwood
or some other material that can handle the demands of
a below grade installation. Furthermore, like your wall
colors, choose flooring that is light in color to bring
out a more light and airy feeling in the space.
