Sump Pumps Types and Options

Oh, the options now-a-days when it comes to having a sump pump system installed in your home.   Sump pump technology has become advanced in the last few years.  Sump pump systems are a great option in wet basement remediation if you are in a constant struggle in keeping your home and basement dry.

With so many different sump pump systems to choose from, you will want to do your homework and take enough time to see what type would work well in your home.

Sump pumps come in different horsepowers.  A determining factor in what type of horsepower is needed with the pump depends on how much water you have gotten into your basement.  Normally, a 1/3 horsepower motor is all that is needed in most homes.  Sump pumps that have a 1/2 horsepowered motor are good for you if you have had major flooding problems to your home, live in a low lying area, or in a region where the area is suseceptable to hurricans, typhoons, etc.

The following are the different types of sump pumps:

  1. Submersible – Has a watertight motor that can be immersed in water.

  2. Pedestal – Has an open motor that is supported on top of a column attached to the pump casing.  The motor sits outside the sump and sits above the basement floor.

  3. Water Powered – These do not use electricity, the sump pump is powered by using city water pressure.

Sump pump back-ups are now available to you when purchasing a pump.  Sump pumps with backups are a wonderful investment that you can make for your home.  Pumps that have back-ups come with a primary pump and a secondary pump.  If for some reason the primary pump does not work, or cannot handle the water flow that is coming in through it, the secondary pump starts up and either takes over for the primary pump, or assists the primary pump with the water flow.  You can also purchase what is called a battery back-up system.  The battery is there for the sump pump system in case power goes out in your home during a storm.

Sump pumps generally last about 10 years if maintained.  Sump pump systems are also a very valuable tool in helping you to keep your home and basement dry, and your valuables protected.
